In Chinese brush painting, both the camellia and the apricot blossom carry layered symbolic meanings connected with beauty, seasons, and scholarly ideals.

Camellias bloom in late winter or early spring, when many other plants are still dormant. Because of this, they symbolise elegance and refined beauty, longevity and endurance, devotion or admiration, noble character. The glossy evergreen leaves also represent steadiness and dignity, which made camellias popular in traditional literati flower paintings.

Apricot blossoms are among the first flowers to bloom in early spring. it symbolise the arrival of spring and renewal.
